Running for President in our country has often been described as “a full contact sport”. We tend to think that our battles today are the worst ever, however, that is just not the case. I’ve attached an article written by Sarah Pruitt entitled, 8 Most Contentious US Presidential Elections. Pruitt brings to light both fascinating characters and unbelievable stories describing some of our past elections which make this year’s election seem mild by comparison.
I live in a “battleground state”. As a consequence of that, the number of ads that are aired on TV, radio, and the internet is almost mind-boggling. As election day creeps closer, the negativity of the ads seems to increase daily! If you are like me, you need a break. This blog post is just that – a break from the drum-beat of negativism that we are subjected to daily! Please – take a look at these three videos! Please enjoy the “spirit” of the videos (all videos are about 1 minute each) and give thanks for living in this wonderful nation! May God Bless America!
Video 1 – Reagan / Mondale Debate
What is so refreshing to me about this clip is not only President Reagan’s humor, it is also Walter Mondale’s smile and laughter! We need more smiles and laughter from the candidates today – wouldn’t you agree?
Video 2 – John McCain at a town hall campaign stop
In this video, I applaud Senator McCain for his courage. In that setting, how many politicians would have reacted the way McCain did? What we were seeing was “character” on display! What was evident in McCain’s remarks is we can have our policy differences and still honor and respect our opponent!
Video 3 – President Obama at John McCain’s Funeral
Here we have a former Democratic President lauding his Republican rival. In his eulogy he describes the kind of man McCain was and touches on his character – how refreshing!
Lessons – we can agree to disagree and yet be agreeable! Regardless of your political party – we are Americans first! During this time leading up to the election, please remember that all citizens have the right to vote for the candidate of their choosing and we honor our nation when we treat each other with dignity and respect.
